2011 Winter Wrap Up
2011 kicked off with a blast of cold air as St. Paul held its 125th annual Winter Carnival. Bike Walk Week joined in the festivities by sponsoring the second annual Moonglow Parade. We recruited volunteers to walk in the parade as part of the Snow Shovel Drill Team. The Snow Shovel Drill Team reiterated the importance of shoveling your sidewalk during the snowy winter months.
The Moonglow Parade also marked the unofficial kick off to our very first winter walking campaign, the Winter Walkoff. The Winter Walkoff was largely a social media campaign to encourage people to get out and walk as a means of transportation everyday during the month of February. Whether it was to the coffee shop, grocery store or post office, we had over 300 people register. The campaign caught momentum on Twitter with many participants tweeting about daily walks using the hashtag #winterwalkoff.
The Winter Carnival fun didn’t end with the Moonglow Parade, we also walked and biked with MetroTransit’s Twinkle Bus in the Torchlight Parade. The Twinkle Bus has long been a staple in the parade and we added a twist year by having volunteers ride Twinkle Bikes! Check out some of the Bike Walk Week Winter Carnival video footage below:

The Bike Walk Week team would like to thank everyone who participated in our winter events. We would also like to thank the retail stores that showed their community that they support winter walking by offering our winter walkers great deals and discounts on their purchases. We look forward to seeing all of you in June!
