Gear

Clothing
For outdoor walking, layer clothing and evaluate the need for rain gear. Any gear store will have a wide range of options and price ranges. Wear a hat or visor when walking outside and add sunglasses depending on the weather.

Shoes & Socks
See a general guide to shoes and information about socks for walking.

Pedometers & Poles
Pedometers are a good motivator and part of a structured walking plan. Here’s information about pedometer features.

Poles and canes are real plus for seniors who need a bit more stability. Poles can add to anyone’s workout. For general information, including how to walk with poles.

Water Bottles and Backpacks
Carry a water bottle for any extended walk. New information suggests avoiding plastic bottles-check gear stores for stainless steel options. A small backpack doubles as a purse, stores clothing and gear and replaces a bag on trips to the store.

GPS Technology
While generally not needed for walking trips, a small handheld device could be useful if you plan to explore an unknown area, such walking through a historic district rather than pre-identified streets.

Stores

One of the best-known gear stores with a good website for checking out styles and options is REI. Midwest Mountaineering also has a wide range of gear. For shoes, take care to frequent stores with experienced sales staff. Or visit a specialty shoe store such as Schuler Shoes which has specific sections for men’s and women’s walking shoes.
